Amb. Lazarus Amayo meeting with Ms. Joy Phumaphi, Executive Secretary, Africa Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA)

Amb. Lazarus Amayo held a meeting with Ms. Joy Phumaphi, Executive Secretary, Africa Leaders Malaria Alliance(ALMA) on 23rd March, 2022 at the Kenya Embassy, Washington DC. In attendance were Ms. Patricia Sanchez and Tara Bracken of United Nations Foundation, Mr. Ekitela Ronald and Ms. Vashti Lechuta, Kenya Embassy.

Amb. Amayo commended ALMA for their effort in the fight against malaria in Africa and for strengthening health systems in the world’s most vulnerable communities. He expressed Kenya’s commitment in the fight against malaria and reiterated the need to improve efficacy and availability of the malaria vaccine.

Ms. Joy Phumaphi informed that the preparations for the World Malaria Day are underway. The event will provide a platform for malaria-endemic countries to engage donor countries and to galvanize support for the 7th replenishment of the Global Fund. The U.S will host the 7th replenishment campaign which seeks to raise USD 18 billion.

However, she expressed concern with regard to attaining the target for the 7th replenishment campaign citing the devastating effects of COVID-19 on economies worldwide and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Amb. Amayo and Ms. Phumaphi agreed to collaborate in making the high-level event a success.
