ePassport application accepted between 9.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.

You can apply for a new passport or replace your current passport through the ecitizen portal www.ecitizen.go.ke. You’ll have to download and print out a form at the end. You must sign and date the form, add the documents and photographs that are required (see below) and submit them in person at the Embassy (2249 R Street NW, WASHINGTON DC 20008) for biometric capture.

Applicants will pay using mobile money, Credit, Debit Cards or online banking.

  • Steps of Application

    1. Register on www.ecitizen.go.ke
    2. Go to epassport and click on the passport application form.
    3. Read the instructions carefully then fill the application form.
    4. Select the mode of payment and pay for the passport fees.
    5. Download and print the application form and application receipts.
    6. Submit the application form in person at the Kenya Embassy – Washington D.C.

  • Requirements

    Requirements for New Applications (Never held a Kenyan passport before):

    1. A duly filled application form.
    2. Original Kenyan Birth certificate and a copy. (If born abroad please see – Birth Certificate for Kenyan children born abroad)
    3. Certificate of Registration if Kenyan by Registration.
    4. Adults 18 years and above – Original Kenyan ID and a copy.
    5. 3 (Three) passport size photos.
    6. Copy of the recommender’s Kenyan ID.
    7. Duly filled Consent form for Minors.
    8. Copies  of Parents Kenyan ID’s.
    9. 2(two) payment invoices for the prescribed fee.

    Requirements for Replacement of Passport (Current holders of passports being phased out):

    1. A duly filled application form.
    2. Copy of Birth Certificate.(If born abroad please see – Birth Certificate for Kenyan children born abroad)
    3. Copy Certificate of Registration if Kenyan by Registration.
    4. Adults 18 years and above – Original Kenyan ID and a copy.
    5. 3 (three) passport size photos.
    6. Copy of the recommender’s Kenyan ID.
    7. Duly filled Consent form for Minors.
    8. Old passport and a copy.
    9. 2(two) payment invoices for the prescribed fee.

    Requirements for Mutilated Passports:

    1. A duly filled application form.
    2. Copy of Birth Certificate.(If born abroad please see – Birth Certificate for Kenyan children born abroad)
    3. Copy Certificate of Registration if Kenyan by Registration.
    4. Adults 18 years and above – Original Kenyan ID and a copy.
    5. 3 (three) passport size photos.
    6. Copy of the recommender’s Kenyan ID.
    7. Duly filled Consent form for Minors.
    8. Old passport and a copy.
    9. Personal  statement explaining circumstances for the damage.
    10. Sworn affidavit to support (9) above.
    11. 2(two) payment invoices for the prescribed fee.

    Requirements for Lost Passports:

    1. A duly filled application form.
    2. Copy of Birth Certificate.(If born abroad please see – Birth Certificate for Kenyan children born abroad)
    3. Copy Certificate of Registration if Kenyan by Registration.
    4. Adults 18 years and older – Original Kenyan ID and a copy.
    5. 3 (three) passport size photos.
    6. Copy of the recommender’s Kenyan ID.
    7. Duly filled Consent form for Minors.
    8. Copy of Old passport.
    9. Personal  statement explaining circumstances for loss.
    10. Sworn affidavit to support (ix) above …
    11. Police report on loss of passport (Not just the case number).
    12. 2(two) payment invoices for the prescribed fee.


  • Notes

    1. It is the onus of the applicant to fulfill all the application requirements as above.
    2. Applications must be presented against original Kenyan National IDs.
    3. All minors must accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.
    4. Change of name apart from through Marriage must be accompanied by a Deed poll and the  changes must be affected in the Kenyan National ID card.
    5. The Birth Certificate numbers appear on the Left hand side of the Birth Certificate (above the date of birth) and not at the top right hand side (Serial No.).
    6. The recommender in Section 7 should be a Kenyan citizen, who personally knows the applicant but not an immediate relative.
    7. Part of the application process involves scanning of your documents. When uploading make sure they are in picture format(.jpeg or .png) and not in document format (.pdf, .rtf, .docx or .doc)
    8. Persons who were born before 27th August 1987 and have acquired Citizenship of other countries before 27th August 2010 will be required to show proof of having regained Kenyan Citizenship( under the provision of Article 14(5) of the constitution of Kenya 2010)(Please see – Dual Citizenship)

  • Preparation for Biometrics

    Your biometrics appointment will involve taking of a picture and fingerprints. Please make sure that your documents are arranged in the following order when coming for your biometrics appointment.

    1. Receipt 1 – Government copy
    2. Receipt 2 – Customer copy
    3. Application form & 3 photos clipped to the top left hand( Page 4)
    4. Copy of Passport (Bio-data page only- page with picture)
    5. Copy of Birth certificate (If born abroad please see – Birth Certificate for Kenyan children born abroad)
    6. Copy of Applicant’s 2nd Generation ID  (For person’s aged 18 years and above)
    7. Recommender’s 2nd Generation ID
    8. Copies of Parents’ documents (ID and Passport) (Optional for Replacements)
    9. Copy of Marriage Certificate
    10. Letters for those requesting change of name
    11. Copy of green card
    12. Copy of Certificate of Registration (For citizens by registration)
    13. For Dual Citizens- Proof of having either regained Kenya Citizenship and or Declared Dual Citizenship

    Preparation for picture
    You will be required to remove any
    – earrings, noserings, studs, necklace, pendant
    – scarf, hoodies, hats, sunglasses
    – Badge holders, name tags, lanyards,headphones,headsets,earpods, earbuds and
    – Adjust your hair so that both ears are visible.


  • Passport pickup Procedures

    After submitting your passport application at the Embassy, you will be issued with a token receipt that has a tracking number starting with the numbers 381000..
    Once the Embassy receives the new epassport from Nairobi, applicants will receive an SMS on the mobile number used in the ecitizen account informing that your passport is ready for pickup. Further the Embassy will also send an email.
    On receipt of the SMS or email, applicants should send to the Embassy The following:

    – Original passport
    – Receipt with token
    – A prepaid self-addressed stamped return envelope for express mail, priority mail, FedEx or UPS with delivery confirmation (regular mail envelopes are not acceptable)

    If you are in the D.C. area you can walk in to pick up your passport. Bring the following:

    – Original passport
    – Receipt with token
