Kenyan Art Quilt Exhibition by The Advocacy Project

On 12th March, 2022, the Textile Museum in Washington DC, hosted the Sister Artist 2 exhibition of Kenyan art quilts. The art was built around 41 embroidered animal designs that were made at the height of the pandemic by women in the informal settlements of Kibera and Kangemi, in Nairobi.

The participants were from the Tandaza Trust (Kibera) and the Kangemi Advocacy Self-Help Group. The wildlife designs were later turned into quilts by volunteer art quilters from North America. The quilts were auctioned and the proceeds will go to the Kenyan women courtesy of the Advocacy Project.

Mr. Ekitela Ronald, Minister and Ms. Vashti Lechuta, Second Secretary represented the Embassy at the exhibition. In his remarks, Mr. Ekitela thanked the project facilitators for creating opportunities for women to not only showcase their talents but also improve livelihoods. He commended the volunteer quilters on the collaboration with Kenyan artist to create unique pieces of art and reiterated the need to enhance the partnerships.
