Emergency Certificate application requirements




Emergency Certificates are issued only in cases of genuine emergency.


(a)Clear Pictures. They should not be blurred nor have a dark hue, all facial features

should be clearly outlined.
(b)Pictures with full face and both ears showing
(c)Pictures taken against a white background
(d)Weaves and hair should not cover the forehead or the rest of the face
(e)Decent pictures-ladies should not be wearing strapy or strapless tops.
(f)Pictures should be without shadows in the background.
(g)Pictures in which the applicant is not smiling or laughing
(h)Pictures should be taken without spectacles.
(i)The size of the pictures should be 2 inches by 2 inches.

  • A Money Order or Cashiers Check of: (Payable to Embassy of The Republic of Kenya)
    (a)$20.00 for emergency certificate
  • A copy of your Birth Certificate or National ID card.
  • Letter of request explaining the emergency
  • A self addressed stamped envelope for the return of your documents. The
    Passport being a secure document, we recommend a PRE-PAID trackable Mail {e.g Express
    Mail,Priority Mail(with delivery confirmation) & Fedex }as a preference for reliable
    mode of postage.Please ensure that your mode of postage has ADEQUATE POSTAGE for
    return of your passport(s) to avoid damage or loss (NB: UPS, Metered stamps
    and Regular mail are not acceptable)

What is an application for a new passport for?

When your passport is Five years old (from the date of issue) it expires and you therefore need to apply for a new passport.


(a) Kindly be informed that whereas the mission will continue to assist in cases of emergency, we shall not tolerate negligence of those Kenyans who deliberately choose to ignore to replace their passports on time and wait until it has expired.
You are therefore required to ensure that you renew your passport six months prior to the expiry date.

(b) Kindly also note that you are required to keep a copy of your passport at all times. This will assist us to process your passport in case your passport gets lost. This copy should be kept in a separate place from your passport.
